An Exquisite Beast

Why did you start An Exquisite Beast?

Traditionally, during the last quarter of the year, my productivity takes a nose dive. It’s no coincidence that’s when a whole slew of new video games come out. Wanting to have something to show for my time other than a slightly higher Gamer Score, I decided to start a daily drawing project. I needed the daily deadline to make sure I don’t slack off!

Every day?

Yep.

How much time do you spend on each drawing?

On average I spend 1.5 – 3 hours on a drawing. The longer drawings are usually a result of tossing 1 or 2 sketches before I find what I’m going to draw for the day.

What do you use to create the drawings?

I use Photoshop from start to finish which is different from how I typically work.

Do you plan your drawings before hand?

Nope. Part of the reason I enjoy this project so much is because it’s much more loose than how I normally create my illustrations. For my regular illustration work, I start with writing ideas down, creating thumbnails, then move to working and reworking a pencil sketch until I feel like it’s perfect. Finally, I scan it in and finish it on the computer bouncing back and forth between Photoshop and Illustrator. With An Exquisite Beast, I sit down without an idea and just start moving my stylus. It feels like I’m discovering a drawing rather working to create one.

How long do you plan on keeping An Exquisite Beast going?

Just like how I approach my drawing each day, part of the beauty of this project is that there is no plan 🙂

Any long term goals?

As Exquisite Beast was originally created with only a web presentation in mind. The sheer size of it now (over 15 yards at 4 months) makes it a little difficult to adapt it to print. I have a couple ideas, but nothing solid yet.
